This study documents how Mathematics Studio, a school-based professional development program similar to lesson study, provided 7th grade teachers with the knowledge, skills and resources to engage students in mathematical discussions. An analysis of the role the coach, principal and teachers played in establishing learning opportunities provides insight into facilitation necessary for sustained, collaborative learning.
