Experiential learning moments have a key role in establishing basic mathematical concepts, but are not easy to orchestrate. Mobile devices may bring an abundance of virtual manipulatives to the classroom. How can teachers use such tools to stage effective learning experiences? The workshop will illustrate, through a number of case studies, how semi-open-ended environments of virtual manipulatives can be used to present elementary math ideas in all their depth, in an accessible way. The attendees will see how a small number of simple teaching strategies can be combined to make the most out of virtual manipulatives. The focus will be on mobile devices, especially tablets, but the principles are easily applicable to laptops in a 1-to-many or 1-on-1 scenarios.
