35- Making an Effective Argument in Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME): Supporting Claims with Evidence

Tuesday, April 24, 2012: 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
Franklin Hall 10 (Philadelphia Marriott Downtown)
This session is intended to highlight the range of research genres and manuscript formats that are potentially viable for publication in JRME.  The goal is to encourage all segments of the mathematics education community to regularly consider JRME as an outlet for their work.

30 minutes

JRME Editorial Team members will provide an overview of how the journal works with regard to submission, review, and decision making.  They will also share information about characteristics of manuscripts that are likely to review well.  Special attention will be paid to how rigor and quality may look different depending on the research genre or manuscript format used by the authors.

60 minutes

Members of the JRME Editorial Team and JRME Editorial Panel will facilitate small group discussions with those in attendance.  Breakout tables will be designated for specific topics that highlight a variety of research genres such as

  • research involving evaluation studies;
  • research that explicitly links with practice and practitioners (e.g., teacher/researcher collaborations, action research, etc.)
  • research from dissertation studies; and
  • research involving emerging methodologies or approaches.

At each table, discussion will focus on the conceptualization and reporting of a specific genre of research, highlighting issues that may be unique to that genre.  Examples may be shared, and there will also be time for participants to ask questions about their own work, consider ways to strengthen manuscripts before submission, and gather insights on how to interpret and respond to advice from reviewers and editors.

Speaker:
M. Kathleen Heid
