For measuring length, the Common Core requires that first graders be taught transitivity and the need for equal units. This teaching is unnecessary because Piaget reported in 1948 that, without any instruction, children demonstrate transitivity by grade 2 and unit iteration after grade 3. The Common Core also confuses measuring time with telling time.
