In this interactive paper session, we present data from our study on the relationships between students’ ideas about functions and their understandings of key concepts of introductory differential calculus. We will share selected examples of students’ work to illustrate students' thinking, and will discuss the implications of this study's results on teaching calculus at both the high school and undergraduate levels.
